Shockwave Therapy

What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy is a modern and highly effective treatment method. The term ‘shockwave’ refers to high-energy sound impulses that travel as waves through a medium (water, air or a solid substance). In modern pain therapy, the healing properties of shockwave therapy are used to treat painful areas. Shockwaves accelerate the healing process by activating the body’s self-healing abilities, stimulating tissue repair and improving blood circulation at the site of the condition.

Are you one of the many patients who suffer from chronic pain and have tried everything possible to get rid of it? Have you already tried injections, medication, physiotherapy, relaxation techniques, and so on? Did your pain always return after a short time, often worse than before? Various scientific studies show that shockwave therapy often produces very good results for a range of conditions. Chronic pain is often caused by inflammation or calcification of tendons or bursae. Tight muscles or muscle knots (trigger points) can also cause significant pain.

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is considered one of the most innovative developments in modern pain management. Unlike conventional treatment methods, ESWT can address the underlying cause of pain without the use of medication or surgery. Successful results are often achieved after only a few treatment sessions.

Do you have any of these complaints?

✔ chronic shoulder complaints, with or without calcification of the tendons
✔ chronic elbow pain (tennis elbow or golfer’s elbow)
✔ pain just below the kneecap
✔ chronic Achilles tendon pain (achillodynia)
✔ heel pain (heel spur)
✔ Peyronie’s disease
✔ chronic neck, shoulder or back pain and tension (trigger points)
✔ other types of muscle and tendon problems

Advantages of Shockwave Therapy

✔ treatment without medication or surgery
✔ short treatment duration (5 to 10 minutes per session)
✔ excellent therapeutic success after an average of 4 to 5 treatments
✔ treatment of the underlying cause rather than the symptoms
✔ pain relief and restoration of full mobility within a few days
✔ few side effects; however, mild redness or swelling may occur immediately after treatment
✔ thanks to shockwave therapy, an injection or even surgery may prove unnecessary

What does a shockwave treatment involve?

First, the chiropractor identifies the painful area based on a consultation and a physical examination. In many cases, additional assessment is carried out using ultrasound. Once the diagnosis has been made and it has been determined that shockwave therapy is indicated, the painful area is exposed to short shockwave impulses. This is done using a ‘treatment gun’ or ‘treatment head’. The treatment is brief, lasting around 5–10 minutes per session. The high-energy acoustic impulses improve metabolism and blood circulation in the painful area, thereby stimulating the body’s recovery mechanism. In other words, ESWT is all about activating the body’s own healing capacity. Treatment sessions usually have an interval of approximately 7–10 days, depending on the condition.
