Herniated Disc

Herniated Disc (Herniated Nucleus Pulposus, HNP)

A hernia (Herniated Nucleus Pulposus, HNP) is a bulging of an intervertebral disc. This bulge can press on a nerve that leaves the spinal cord at the level of the vertebrae and runs to the leg. An inflammatory reaction may also occur, causing the same symptoms. This can occur in the lower back, but also in the neck. Pain may develop in the leg or arm, possibly accompanied by signs of nerve impairment such as numbness, tingling, or loss of muscle strength. Causes include repeated (incorrect) lifting, prolonged sitting, and little or no physical exercise.

A diagnosis can be made through a medical history (anamnesis) and a comprehensive neurological examination. If necessary, an MRI scan can support the diagnosis. The treatment plan is aimed at reducing symptoms and improving functionality. To achieve this effectively, several therapies will be involved in the treatment process. Various combinations are possible, but it is important that the patient actively cooperates and follows the advice given.

✔ The chiropractor adjusts the spine and pelvis to reduce the bulging of the affected intervertebral disc.
✔ Exercise therapy to strengthen the core muscles.
✔ Ergonomic advice: the right balance between rest and healthy movement.
✔ In some cases, podiatric insoles can have a positive effect on recovery.
✔ In the initial phase, it is advisable to wear a lumbar support belt to reduce inflammation or irritation of the nerve.
✔ An inversion table can reduce pressure on the nerve. In our centre, we have several versions available, including options for home use.
