How does an Ultrasound examination work?
During the application of ultrasound, high-frequency sound waves are used. These cannot be heard by humans. The waves are emitted by a transmitter (called a transducer) that is placed on the skin. This transducer also acts as the receiver of the waves that are reflected back by the body’s tissues. The different tissues in the body absorb and reflect the sound waves to varying degrees. The transducer is connected to a computer, which converts the sound waves into electrical signals that appear on the screen as shades of grey. In this way, an ultrasound image of the tissues is formed on the screen.
What does an examination involve?
Depending on the area to be examined, the patient sits on a chair or lies on the treatment couch. A transparent gel is applied between the transducer and the body to ensure good contact and to eliminate air bubbles between the transducer and the skin. The examiner scans the area, studies the image on the monitor and, if required, saves a number of relevant images. The examination is relatively quick and the patient usually feels nothing. Occasionally, mild pain may occur when scanning a sensitive area. The examination lasts an average of 30 minutes. The examiner will communicate the findings to you.
